Crochet Area Rug (Virus Shawl Pattern) | Blankets

So I finished my second area rug and I really like how it came out! I used the famous Virus Shawl pattern but adapted it to make a square instead of a triangle. The pattern is a graph pattern but it's pretty easy to read.

Here is a photo of the graph pattern for the shawl:

I am going to write the pattern out assuming you are using just one color if you want to use more colors then change colors on the rows you want to get the desired color design.

Abbreviations:

  • ch - chain
  • sc - single crochet
  • dc - double crochet
  • sl st - slip stitch
  • sp - space

Okay so first make a magic circle then:

Round 1: ch 2, dc into the circle 19 times, sl st to top of ch 2

Round 2: ch 2, dc twice in each stitch around, sl st to top of ch 2

Round 3: ch 3, [dc, ch 1] in each stitch around, sl st around the ch 3

Round 4: *ch 7, skip next ch 1 sp, sc in next ch 1 sp, ch 7, skip next ch 1 sp, sc in next ch 1 sp, [ch 4, sc in next ch 1 sp three times], repeat from * to end, sl st into first ch 1 sp

Round 5: sl st into ch 7 sp, ch 2, 10 dc into same ch 7 sp, 10 dc into next ch 7 sp, *[sc into next ch 4 sp, ch 4 twice], sc into next ch 4 sp, 10 dc into both ch 7 spaces, repeat from * to end, sl st to top of ch 2

Round 6: ch 2, dc in same st, dc in next 19 stitches, *sc into next ch 4 sp, ch 4, sc in next ch 4 space, dc in next 20 stitches, repeat from * to end, sl st to top of ch 2

Round 7: ch 3, work [dc, ch 1 in next st] and in each dc stitch to end skipping the ch 4 sp,  sl st around first ch 3

Round 8: sc into next ch 1 sp, *[ch 4, skip next ch 1 sp, sc in next ch 1 sp] three times, ch 7, skip next ch 1 sp, sc in next ch 1 sp, ch 7,  skip next ch 1 sp, sc in next ch 1 sp, [ch 4, skip next ch 1 sp, sc in next ch 1 sp] three times, ch 7, skip next three ch 1 spaces, sc in next ch 1 sp, repeat from * to end, sl st to first sc

Round 9: sc into first ch 4 sp, [ch 4, sc into ch 4 sp] twice, *10 dc into both ch 7 spaces, [sc into ch 4 sp, ch 4] twice, 10 dc in next ch 7 sp, repeat from * to end

Round 10: *sc into ch 4 sp, ch 4, sc into ch 4 sp, dc in each dc stitch, repeat from * to end, skip ch 4 sp & sl st to first dc st

Round 11: ch 3, *[dc, ch 1] in each dc st, skip ch 4 sp, repeat to end, sl st around first ch 3

Now just keep repeating rounds 8 to 11 until you have the desired size.

The following video is a tutorial on how to get started.
